They are the verbs and nouns
of life’s longing for expression.

They come through you, but not from you,
and though they are with you
yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your point of view
but not your steadfast conviction,
for they have their own conclusions.

You may safeguard their words,
but not their meaning, for their meanings
abide in the house of providence,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
